During laser eye surgery are you allowed to blink?

Posted on 18th February 2009 by admin in laser eye surgery

I have a really hard time staring or keeping my eyes open for more than half a minute. Would laser eye surgery be good for me if this is the case?

You wouldn't be able to blink because your eye would be held open, but they will administer rewetting drops during the procedure. If you have trouble with not blinking, you may have dry-eye. When you go for a consultation, they will test to see if you have dry-eye and give you a prescription for it. People with dry-eye are not good candidates.

Contact Lenses and Laser eye surgery?

Posted on 14th February 2009 by admin in laser eye surgery uk

Hi —
My eye sight is going really bad slowly but it is noticable and i hate glasses my parents wear contacts.I have been thinking if i was old enough t get laser eye surgery (I am 13 I live in the UK) or would i not be allowed i would pay for it myself. Also if i wasn't allowed i was thinking of getting contacts for everyday life i hate carrying glasses and they really don't suit me so i was wanering if i was too young? and also one slight worry is while i outside what if something went in my eye while i was wearing contacts? any ideas on how to persuade parents for them?will it do anyharm?Alsowhat would be better the ones that you dispose of everyday or the one that you clean everyday?i would be carefull when wearing them also can you notice contacts because someone once noticed my parents were wearing contacts when they never knew, any other advice would be great, also after going to the opticions for an eye test for contacts how long do you need to wait before they come?

Thanks
P.S I AM A MALE

No surgeon will do lasik on a 13-year-old. You need to be at least 21 since that's when your eyes will supposedly stop changing. But even when you do reach 21, you may not be able to get lasik but are a candidate for another type of laser corrective surgery.

As for contacts, it's a pain to get them in and out for a few days and will be uncomfortable, but your eyes will get used to them. You do need a prescription and a fitting from your optometrist. I wear contacts but wear glasses when I'm home. You can't fully escape glasses. After your optometrist orders the contacts expect to wait for at least 5 days to a week. Just prove to your parents that you're responsible enough to handle contacts, because there can be dangerous consequences if you don't.

Whats the maximum age for having laser eye surgery?

Posted on 14th February 2009 by admin in laser eye surgery

My dad is 46 years old and has a short distance eye problem is it too late for him to have laser eye surgery? He called an eye specialist and he said it was too late. Is this true?

In general, once someone is presbyopic (needs reading glasses) laser eye surgery is not the best option. Additionally, as we near cataract age, laser eye surgery is not recommended because it makes it difficult to properly choose the intraocular lens (IOL) implanted at the time of cataract surgery.

Two options that may be available to your father are Phakic IOLs (PIOLs) and Clear Lens Extraction (also called Refractive Lens Exchange or RLE). The first option involves placing a lens inside the eye in front of your natural lens. The second option is essentially the same as cataract surgery (only there is no cataract to remove, just the natural lens in the eye).

Which option is best for your father will depend on a number of things which would require examination by a surgeon who performs these types of refractive surgery. It is critical that you find a surgeon with experience in both PIOLs and RLE. I have written an article, "10 Things You Must Know Before Choosing Your Cataract Surgeon" that can help in choosing any type of surgeon. To receive a copy of this document follow this link:
