I’ve read on some forums, that certain people, will almost definitely lose their ability to see up close, after a lasik procedure? Why is this? And is there a way to know ahead of time if this would arise?
The people you’re referring to that have had LASIK and then lose their ability to see up close probably have presbyopia. Presbyopia is associated with aging - over time the lens in our eyes loses elasticity and therefore the ability to change shape to allow us to see up close. That’s why people get the over the counter reading glasses. LASIK is surgery to change to curvature of the cornea to allow people to see without correction. Presbyopia has to do with the lens. People who have LASIK to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and / or astigmatism will still need to wear reading glasses once they reach a certain age - we say 40 years old as an estimate. Some people who are older and have already developed presbyopia have monovision LASIK - one eye is surgically corrected to be able to see up close & the other eye to see in the distance. Having cataract surgery also doesn’t change the fact the everyone will develop presbyopia.

In the future most people will probably have laser eye surgery instead of wearing glasses, so does that mean an end to opticians?
No. I know for a fact I will never get Laser Eye surgery.

So many offers, so many clinics, but who can I really trust?
Any real ex-patients out there can recommend?
x
I have considered laser eye surgery, and two of my friends have had it, apparently with excellent results.
However I am still very concerned about the risks. I went for a consultation with Optical Express and although the optometrist seemed very professional (and she had had LASIK herself), she did not explain the risks clearly enough in my opinion.
I am not trying to be overly negative but before you go any further PLEASE read up on the following things:
- Post-LASIK corneal ectasia
- Traumatic flap dislocation (sometimes years after surgery)
- Post-LASIK chronic dry eyes
- Lower best-corrected visual acuity (even after "successful" surgery)
Also watch a few videos of surgeries online (especially the ones with complications). I recommend the following site: http://www.lasikcomplications.com/
This one has some exellent information as well: http://www.usaeyes.org/
They are both USA based but most of the information is relevant anywhere.
If you do decide to go for LASIK it is worth looking at all-laser LASIK (aka Intralase / Femtosecond Lasik / Bladeless Lasik) as this seems to give better results than the older version where the flap is cut with a blade.
I have no optical training whatsoever so please check everything I’ve said with a professional. I am just another potential laser surgery patient who is concerned about the risks! Also everything I have said above refers to LASIK, you may also want to consider LASEK / PRK.
