What’s the UK army’s take on laser eye surgery?

Posted on 27th June 2011 by admin in laser eye surgery uk

From what I’ve looked up its only allowed for some roles but I can’t find out which ones. I really just want to know if I can get it done and still not be restricted in what I’ll be allowed to do.
@Damien M I want to join as infantry but I’d like to have some sort of options say a few years down the line.

and what role are you interested in? it wont affect a infantry man.

‘Edit’ so if your interested in joining the Infantry, laser eye surgery should not be a problem.
i know this from my own experience. i never had laser eye surgery per say… but i didnt get top marks for eye sight either in the eye test. up in scotland. then again in catterick (north yorkshire) but still passed the intake. aslong as you can read A-Z from a short distance everything will work out.
and if your looking to move on from infantry down the line? you will be able to do so, through the chain of command. (just speak to your CO) or… even mention it to your recruiter?

IntraLase - All Laser LASIK is there a difference?

Posted on 3rd February 2011 by admin in laser eye surgery uk

I am looking to get my laser eye surgery done in the summer but is there a difference with IntraLase and All Laser Lasik?

http://www.optimax.co.uk/treatment_costs.aspx

Not really; it’s like the whole Kleenex/"facial tissue" thing. Intralase is one company’s laser technology, but there are other lasers on the market that do the same thing. Every surgeon has their own preference as to which brand of laser works best for them, but the technology is the same whether you call it "Intralase" or "bladeless" or "all-laser" or whatever.
Note that there is a big difference between LASIK and PRK (which doesn’t use a blade either)… you’ve called it "all laser lasik" so I’m assuming you already understand this :)

What age do you have to be to have laser eye surgery?

Posted on 11th December 2010 by admin in laser eye surgery uk

hi, i want to be a firefighter or a police constable when i am older but i have bad sight . how old do you have to be in the UK to have laser eye sugery and can you become a police officer or a fire fighter if you wear contact lenses??? Thanks

Footprintz is correct about the age thing, but regarding the services jobs I don’t think they’re too keen on recruiting those who have poor vision.
I applyed for the Police Specials earlier in the year but was rejected because I wear contacts (I think it’s something to do with if your contacts come out during some action, then you’ll be pretty much useless). Wait until your optician says you’re ready for surgery then go for it.

How old do you have to be to apply for laser eye surgery?

Posted on 27th October 2010 by admin in laser eye surgery uk

For example if the legal age is 18, can you be 17 to APPLY for it and wait until you’re 18 to have it done or do you have to be 18 to apply? Is the legal age in the UK 18 or 21? Also, what happens during the procedure and afterwards?
Thanks :)
The main issue is that you want to wait until your eyesight is stable (no longer getting worse). Otherwise, if they do the procedure too soon and your eyes get worse afterwards, you will either have to get glasses again (after spending a lot of money to not wear glasses), or go through the risks and inconvenience of having the procedure re-done; neither would be pleasant.

What this all means is, usually you shouldn’t do the procedure until your early 20’s or later.

I think there are several websites that explain all about the procedure. Keep in mind that there are various things that can go wrong (although only a small percentage of the time) . You want to research the success rate of whoever you contemplate having do the procedure, this is not the time to go with the "low bidder".

Driving licence revoked due to medical reasons?

Posted on 19th September 2010 by admin in laser eye surgery uk

Hi I am a 39 year old type 1 diabetic on insulin pump in the UK, i had laser treatment to my left eye, right eye removed back in 2000 after the surgery i lost my driving licence due to visual field loss, at present i have stable diabetic eye disease (retinopathy) good sight in left eye but i am fighting to get my driving licence back, i am able to read a number plate and i do have visual field of 120 deg on the horizon.I have sort into hundreds of sites for help but i feel i am on my own with no support, if i lived in America there are organisations helping people like my situation, but nothing in the united kingdom. Will never give up on getting my licence back, i drove for 5 years with one eye without any incidents, i am very willing to take any courses or assesments for safe driving but how can i without a driving licence, i did hold a full uk class 1 driving licence.Any advice or support greatly appreciated thanks Shaun

The procedure is that you apply for the licence back and they ask for medical details. There are set standards for monocular vision that are acceptable.
One is that the working eye basically has to be perfect and it seems yours is not.
This has nothing to do wiith pressure groups being or not being available to help - if you cannot meet the standard set then no amount of groups will help you.
Why is it that when anything out of the ordinary occurs all of a sudden people start to look for "Support"? The people of this country need to get themselves together and be more self reliant.
Obviously you will also be aware that you cannot hold a bus or lorry licence with monocularity under any circumstances at all.

Recommended Place for laser Eye Surgery in Auckland New Zealand?

Posted on 18th August 2010 by admin in laser eye surgery uk

My eye’s are really beginning to bother me…I was prescribed glasses around 2 years ago now due to short sightedness, basically I can’t focus properly on distant objects, causing me to feel very tired and sometimes have very blurred vision if focusing into the distance..

Now admittedly I never really took to wearing the glasses full time and hardly ever feel comfortable wearing them. I was thinking about getting contact lenses as I realise how much it is now effecting my life, when a friend recommended to look into having ‘the zap’ as in the long run it will be a lot more better not having to get used to wearing and the pricing of constantlyy buying lenses..

Just wondered if anyone could recommend anywhere plus give a rough price on how much it is?…plus im actually from the UK originally, and could get it done over there so was wondering would it be any cheaper?

Any advice what so ever would be greatly appreciated!

thanks!

Highly recommended is LASIK . The eye institute in Auckland, it is the best clinic in NZ and always has recent technology and an advanced laser. They have all the usual payment plans. Ask around about their reputation.

Anywhere in UK which will do laser eye surgery on somebody with nystagmus?

Posted on 15th August 2010 by admin in laser eye surgery uk

I already know that there is nothing that can be done for my nystagmus at this time, which really kinda sucks. However I wanted to look at getting my numerous other eye problems fixed if anything to alleviate some of the difficulties, so I only have to deal with the nystagmus.

The other eye problems I have are photophobia, myopia and occular albenism (the cause of the nystagmus no doubt)

I know of those the only one laser surgery could fix is the myopia. I’m really just hoping for a difference, any tiny difference woudl be good.

So yeah, if anyone knows of anywhere in the UK which would do it, please feel free to lemme know.

Try contacting the London Vision Clinic.

On their FAQ page, they said laser eye surgery can be performed if you have nystagmus. As they note, it may not treat the condition but will lessen the symptoms.

Here is the Contact US link for the Clinic: http://www.londonvisionclinic.com/contact-us

Good luck!

How much does laser eye surgery cost in the UK?

Posted on 21st July 2010 by admin in laser eye surgery uk

With companies advertising from £395 per eye, I’m interested in how much it has cost people recently with different prescriptions: my worst eye is -8.50 with 1.75 astigmatism, so I’m imagining it will cost me a lot…
