My LASIK Surgery

Posted on 30th August 2009 by admin in lasik - Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

My eyesight wasn’t nearly as bad as most who wear glasses, but bad enough to hinder me in a lot of the active activities I participate in. I think I heard about LASIK when I was in high school or college, and as soon as I heard about it wanted it. My mom actually got her eyes done (much worse than mine) right about 4 years ago and IMMEDIATELY raved about the results. This really didn’t do anything to help other than making me want to do it even more. I had a consult about 18 months back but it turned out the cost was going to be half again as much as I thought and was prepared to pay. So, after waiting and shrugging it off, I found out about 6 weeks ago that the price had been dropped dramatically due to the country’s current economic state. That was all I needed! I went back for my evaluation, had to get an extra test done due to an extreme asymmetrical stigmatism (sp?) and everything came back great. The hardest part was waiting the two weeks I had to after scheduling it.

Anyway, the vid is pretty much self explanatory. Hopefully you can make it through and see what it’s all about. And yes, I really did feel nothing.

LASIK or Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis is a surgical procedure intended to reduce a person’s dependency on glasses or contact lenses.

LASIK surgery is most commonly performed as a cure for myopia (nearsightedness), but can also be used to cure hyperopia (farsightedness) or astigmatism (corneal irregularities).

LASIK is a procedure that permanently changes the shape of the cornea using a special laser and thus focusing the light rays exactly on the retina.

The steps of the procedure are as follows:

A suction ring is placed on the eye to stabilize and check the eye pressure.

The microkeratome, a cutting instrument, is attached to the suction ring.

The blade of the microkeratome is used to cut a flap in the cornea.

The exposed inner layer of the cornea is then reshaped with an excimer laser.

The corneal flap is returned to its original position.

LASIK is an ambulatory procedure; the patient can walk into the surgery center, have the procedure and walk out again and is awake the whole time. Occasionally, the doctor may administer a mild oral sedative.
